Boston Township

Many of the organized events in the valley are conducted on Township roads. For the safety and convenience of Boston Township residents and event participants, the Boston Township Trustees adopted a policy for the events. A permit is required. If you are organizing an event in the Township, please review and follow the policy. Boston Township is one of a kind in all of the United States. We are a population surrounded by a Federal Park. With fewer than 1,000 residents we have limited resources to support police, fire and EMS, road maintenance and litter control. Fire, EMS and Police are part time services funded only by residents' tax dollars.

Of the more than 3 million annual visitors to the Park, thousands come to the Township as part of organized events such as the Towpath Marathon, the Sweet Corn bicycle ride, the Ride for Kids motorcycle event and many, many others. For the safety of visitors, event participants and residents, the Township's public and safety officials need to know when events are planed in order to prevent potential conflicts of routes, to have adequate safety forces available and to notify residents of congested roads.

If visitors need EMS service, it is provided by our part time EMS staff. If traffic control is needed, it is provided by our part time police force. EMS or police services provided outside of one regular working shift are volunteer hours. The National Park and the Federal Government do not pay for EMS, fire or police services required for thousands of non-residents in the Township each year.

If the police, EMS or fire department need to reach an event participant, advance notice insures adequate response personnel. If the police, EMS or fire department need to reach a resident, they need to know which routes may be blocked by an event. And, since our citizens will be moving about on their normal business, we need to notify them by our web site to expect congestion on the roads.
